Licensed Clinical Child Psychologist
Katherine Cofer, PsyD is a clinical psychologist licensed in Alabama and Tennessee. She graduated from Wheaton College in 2016 with a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and a concentration in neuropsychology. She went on to complete her predoctoral internship training at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS). Dr. Cofer is also has interjurisdictional licensure through PsyPact and is authorized to provide telehealth services in many states in the US. This includes virtual therapy and assessment sessions to bring care to when and where you need it.
Dr. Cofer's clinical work has included practice with PTSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and a special focus on psychological assessment. She worked as the Director of Psychology Training at CAVHCS, guiding predoctoral interns and other students through becoming competent, capable clinicians in therapeutic and assessment techniques. During this role, she developed and led numerous assessment seminars and training events. Through her work with the VA Health Care System, Dr. Cofer has gained relevant clinical experience working with older adult populations that has allowed her to develop skills in navigating issues related to aging, including health-related changes, role transitions, dementias, and grief.
Dr. Cofer's areas of expertise include cognitive evaluation of adults experiencing various mental health concerns, including dementias, ADHD, and other conditions impacting thinking abilities. This was honed during her training at the University of Chicago's neuropsychology department during graduate school. Each evaluation consists not only of a detailed interview, but also objective test measures, self-report evaluations, and a comprehensive feedback session to discuss results and recommendations.
In addition to assessment experience, Dr. Cofer is a proud proponent of evidence-based treatments for many common mental health symptoms. She has completed trainings in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Written Exposure Therapy (WET) for PTSD; Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) for depression; Motivational Interviewing (MI) for behavior change support; and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) and Nightmares (CBT-N). She currently works as a training consultant in CBT for Depression to train other clinicians across the country in this approach.
When not focused on psychology, you can find Dr. Cofer out in the garden raising more tomatoes than any single family can eat, chasing after two wild and crazy kids, finding a spare quiet minute to read a page or two from a good book, or writing short fiction.
